Balls, masks, and more
The smaller pieces of gear: what each one is for, who needs it, and how to size it.
Softballs
- 10 and under: an 11-inch ball in most leagues.
- 11 and older: the regulation 12-inch ball.
For practice at home, two or three balls are plenty. Softer training balls are good for brand-new young players who are still learning to catch.
Fielder's face masks
A fielder's mask is a cage that protects her face while she plays in the field. Pitchers and infielders, who are closest to the batter, wear them most. Some leagues require masks for these positions, so check your league's rules.
- Size: most come in youth and adult sizes. It should sit snug without pressing on her nose or cheeks.
- She should see clearly when she looks down at a ground ball and up at a pop-up.
- Make sure it's made for softball, not baseball.
Sliding shorts
Padded shorts that go under her softball pants. They protect her hips and thighs when she slides. Buy her normal shorts size. Most players wear them every game.
Batting gloves
Batting gloves help with grip and prevent blisters, especially in cold or sweaty weather. They're optional.
- To size them: measure her hand from the crease at the bottom of her palm to the tip of her middle finger, then check the brand's chart.
- A snug fit: no loose fabric at the fingertips.
Bat bags
A backpack-style bag with a fence hook is the most popular choice. It holds a bat or two, her glove, helmet, cleats, and a water bottle. Bigger is better, because gear fills a bag fast.
Extras worth having
- Softball pants, belt, and socks in the team's colors.
- A big water bottle.
- Sunscreen and a visor or sunglasses for the outfield.
- Glove conditioner, used a little at a time.
